Worldwide the trend towards sustainability is influencing our lives on a daily basis. This trend towards sustainability also influences our travel and holiday decisions. In an attempt to both set a baseline and to establish the status quo of community based ecotourism in Southern Africa this investigation was initiated. This presentation will deliver some of the preliminary findings of the investigation into the social sustainability of community based ecotourism in Southern Africa through the use of a number of social indicators. Representative case studies were investigated across Southern Africa that will serve to create a baseline for future investigations of social sustainability in community based ecotourism.
