Operationalising the Sustainability Imperative: An Australian Case-Study
This paper uses dominant wisdom among thought-leaders in sustainability to argue that burgeoning environmental problems can only be solved if they are viewed as a significant opportunity to collectively galvanise economic and social activity by government, the private sector, and civil society. It further asserts that private sector’s strategic engagement with sustainability efforts is predicated largely on the perceived financial value proposition of such a stance. It underlines the salutary effects on the sustainability movement, of the increasing number of exemplar companies that are proving that “green is green”. By tracing the origin and dramatic rate of rise of changes in environmental driving forces, this paper foregrounds the potential existentialist threat to future generations and thus shapes sustainability as a question of information, organisation and investment that requires collaboration among many constituencies. This paper thereafter uses the case-study of an ongoing Australian sustainability-vision initiative to showcase the envisioning and creation of such an eco-system, and the critical success factors that need to be addressed in a real-world context. It urges many iterations of similar strategic initiatives such as the one described in this paper by other interested parties across geographies and different social and economic contexts to build the body of knowledge available to research and praxis going forward.
