In cooperation with the city of Santa Monica’s Sustainable City Program, the Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce established an Environmental Affairs Committee with the mission to promote an environmentally, socially and economically sustainable community. To that end the Committee has launched a number of programs designed to educate, facilitate and recognize businesses and other organizations that achieve a level of excellence in their pursuit of sustainable methods of operation. Initially, these programs focused on efforts to honor innovators and early adopters of sustainable practices. Over a ten year period, the programs evolved to include information dissemination, incentives, and increasingly developed approaches for publicly recognizing and encouraging more organizations to adopt sustainable methods into their operations. The Committee’s flagship program is the Sustainable Quality Award which recognizes voluntary activities by companies and organizations in four areas of sustainability. These areas are Economic Development, Social Responsibility, Stewardship of the Built Environment, and Stewardship of the Natural Environment. The most recently added program is the Green Business Certification program which provides public verification that the certified company has met established criteria for sustainable operation.
