Sustainable development requires social economical, energy and environmental sustainability. Explosive growth of populations has increased the need for the rapid industrialization, this in turn led to resource consumption to unprecedented levels. Sustainable industrial development needs awareness among the industries, technological advances, various alternatives to reduce the waste etc.
In the recent past, the regulatory authorities have taken active steps to continuously monitor pollution levels in the industries. With active involvement of the industries and regulatory authorities significant improvements are brought in the pollution control and reduction in resource consumption. Two of the most important tools used by the regulatory authority are environmental impact assessment (EIA) and environmental audit (EA). The environmental audit has proved to be one of the important and effective tools of Environmental management system.
In the present paper, how the environmental audit as a tool has been implemented by the state of Gujarat, India has been discussed. Effectiveness of the audit scheme in reducing resource consumption, encourage research, and bring in environmental awareness has been demonstrated with the help of case studies.
