Telehealth is widely recognized as a viable approach to reduce health disparities that are brought about by lack of access to healthcare. The challenges to widespread buy-in to Telehealth as a global option are rooted in the absence of detailed, practical research in this arena. The purpose of this paper is to establish the capacity for technology to aid in improving healthcare outcomes and to further explore in what contexts Telehealth is the most effective to provide a greater return on investment from a sustainable healthcare perspective. A mixed method approach is used. Data analysis using the United Nations in Millenium Development Goals database sought to determine whether access to technology has an impact on healthcare outcomes. Results of the robust model indicate that access to technology, development assistance, and healthcare expenditures per capita account for over 60% of the variation in child mortality in developing countries. Having established that increased access to technology can impact health outcomes, case studies are then reviewed for the most appropriate application of Telehealth as a technological advance for access to care. Analysis reveals that Telehealth can be a viable option as an adjunct to existing healthcare systems infrastructure, not in place of it.
