**Common Fisheries Policy Review **

The EU Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) is to undergo a mid-term review with the ambition for a major reform to be proposed by 2012. A report has outlined the deficiencies and shortcomings of the CFP following the latest reform of the policy in 2002.

The report makes some recommendations including: 1) current overcapacity of the EU fishing fleet; 2) fishermen responsibility and accountability for the use of a public resource; 3) ecological sustainability needs to be placed before economic and social sustainability; 4) clearer hierarchy in the decision-making process between principles and implementation; 5) alignment between the CFP and the Marine Strategy Framework Directive; 6) joined-up approach to fisheries management. EU. It is expected that the European Commission will launch a consultation on the Common Fisheries Policy early 2009 inviting stakeholders to send their comments.
